French Immersion/Extended French
Opeongo High School offers an Extended French (French Immersion) program for all grades. Any student may enroll who meets the eligibility criteria.
French Immersion is intended for Anglophone families. Parents/guardians and students do not have to speak French at home. Students enrolled in French Immersion benefit from strong organizational skills as information is often presented at a faster pace. A keen motivation to learn French is also beneficial.
Eligibility
Students who wish to apply for French Immersion must meet the following criteria:
- Acceptable performance in the regular academic program and acceptable learning skills;
- A satisfactory degree of student motivation and commitment;
- Acceptable performance in French as a Second Language (FSL) core program;
- Joint decision by parents/guardians and students;
- The recommendation of the FSL teacher and principal; and
- Support at home that encourages learning and effort.
Courses/French Certificate
Students must complete six courses to obtain their Extended French certificate with two courses in both Grade 9 and Grade 10. La Géographie (Grade 9) and Histoire du Canada (Grade 10) are offered in alternate years. For 2013-2014, Grade 9 and 10 students will take Grade 10 Histoire du Canada.
